Goblins' Gold - A coffee break Broughlike with Pico8

When I came across Reid's Broughlike tutorial I felt it would be a great guide to finally create a mini-roguelike in Pico-8.

Wait, what?

Ok, lets take it bit by bit:

  • Traditional roguelikes are turn based games that usually take place in a grid, with procedural content and permadeath. Roguelikes usually focus on tactical movements, becoming chess-like games where you take your time to consider your next movement.
  • Jeremiah Reid is the creator of Golden Krone Hotel, a fantastic traditional roguelike about killing vampires and vampire hunters alike (among other creatures), alternating between human and vampire form.
  • Broughlikes are named after roguelikes and Michael Brough's games. They are condensed, turn-based puzzle-like games that take place in a quite small grid, focusing on a single clever mechanic.
  • And finally, Pico 8 is a "fantasy console for making, sharing and playing tiny games and other computer programs". It's like a happy place for game development, mainly because its harsh restrictions (128x128 screen, 16 colors, 4 sound channels) enforce creativity and focuses development. It's easy to avoid feature creep when there's no room for code...

Goblins' Gold comes from all those things: it follows Reid's tutorial, originally written for Javascript, in Pico8. It's my first contact with both creating a roguelike (although a veeeery small one, so it's more a Broughlike) and doing something in Pico8.

While I use Unity and C# in my daily job to create games at PlayMedusa, I still feel like creating games on my free time. Pico8 has scratched two itches, so to speak: making it easy and straightforward to jump into creating a game by limiting choices, and finally making a tiny roguelike.

Hope you like it!
