Kaiju Control Force

Once again, PlayMedusa teams up with the fantastic Isla Calavera Ciudad de La Laguna movie festival to bring you a game inspired by movies.
In 2024, we’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of everyone’s favorite kaiju, Godzilla! A game about a massive monster stomping cities and battling armies sounds like a perfect fit, right? Well, we’ve been there before. Our tribute to Ray Harryhausen, TITANS CAME FROM THE RAY (check it out here), explored that theme. And our Pico8 remake of RAMPAGE (see it here) had monsters demolishing cities too.
So we followed the lead of modern Godzilla movies—not by adding Kong (we covered that with KONG AND LITTLE MISS WRAY last year: play here)—but by focusing on the human factor!
Introducing KAIJU CONTROL FORCE, a love letter to classic one-screen platformers like BurgerTime and Lode Runner. Picture frantic, multiplayer chaos as you take on up to 14 kinds of bioengineered rats! Navigate platforms, ladders and ropes, buy items from vending machines, hack security consoles, throw things at rats (even other rats) and survive six procedurally generated levels to get to the Mecha Kaiju MaintenanceBay and SAVE THE DAY!
Hope you have fun!

I really love the concept of your game and have played it for about an hour over 3 sessions. I love modern spins on single screen platform games. However, the game is really hard. Frustratingly hard! It reminds me of how tough 8-bit games were in the 1980s.
Level 1 is manageable and I can complete that without dying. Level 2 ramps up the difficulty curve with the bee and cactus head. I have only got to level 3 twice and get very quickly killed by the mouse in the airplane that drops fire. I dread to think how hard the last stages are! I'm not sure I have the skill set or patience to progress any further.
It would be awesome if you had an easier mode, where enemies spawned slower and minimize the number of flying enemies to one or none at all.
Also, having to hold down a button to hold onto something starts to cause my hand to ache. If you could press the button once to grab something then again to release would help or maybe just auto pick it up.
The graphics and animation in between levels are really good and like I said earlier, this is a great concept.
Thank you a lot for playing and taking the time to write that comment! We know the game is difficult, but it's beatable! It's a matter of keeping rat numbers under control and buying extra lifes and shields in the vending machines. Some rats are indeed way more difficult to deal with than others (wait until you see the one piloting a plane!) But there's a strategy for beating them all. It's indeed a game made inspired by oldschool one-screen arcades. Have you tried playing in coop? One player can revive the other one and you won't miss a life : )
In relation to grabbing things, we mimicked how Mario picks and grabs koopa shells by keeping a button pressed, then releases the button to throw them. It's true it can be tiring here, because you are constantly grabbing things. I'll see if press-to-grab then press-to-launch makes sense here, I'm not sure! We certainly tried a lot of combinations during development.
Once again, thanks for playing!
It sounds like this game works best as a co-op. I'll see if I can get my son to play with me and introduce him to some proper games like yours 😀.
Been thinking about it and I even considered adding some kind of adaptative difficuly. As in "if you die, enemies spawn a bit slowlier each time". But yes, the game was conceived co-op from the beginning! One can try to free rats while the other one takes care of devices. It's doable solo, but much more difficult ^-^
